The Vučedol dove is the most famous ceramic vessel from archaeological sites at Vučedol, in northern Croatia.
It is a testament to ancient European culture which existed on the right bank of the Danube River in the period of 3000 to 2400 B.C. The culture that bears the name Vučedol is contemporary with the Sumerian period in Mesopotamia, the Old Kingdom in Egypt and the beginnings of Troy. In its initial phase it was located in Srijem and Eastern Slavonia, and in the later stage, it spread over the whole of Croatia and parts of what are today 11 countries in Central and Eastern Europe.
The dove figurine, symbolizing prosperity and fertility, is an excellent example of artistic inspiration and religious symbol of style, culture and new European civilization in the ascendancy.
Replicas made out of baked clay or plaster today bear an “Authentic Croatian souvenir” mark, and can be found in Old Town souvenir shops.
